Historical Background

Annual total corn requirement for both animal and human consumption in Sri Lanka is 300,000 Mt approximately. In 1989, 95% of the total corn requirement of Sri Lanka was imported resulting in a huge loss of foreign exchange of more than US$ 75 Million annually.

KST Evergreen with its visionary concept of making Sri Lanka self-sufficient from Corn pioneered the corn cultivation promoting with low income farmer families in the rural dry zone area. We invested in internationally recognized processing, modern storage facilities and supplying for both animal feed millers and human consumption.

Capacity

KST Evergreen executed forward sale contracts with farmers cultivating 20,000 Hectares in the Anuradhapura District in the North Central Province and 25,000 Hectares in the Monaragala District in the Uva Province benefiting over 22,000 farmer families.

Project Office & Processing Plants at Monaragala and Anuradhapura we are able to purchase a total of 140,000 Mt annually which is 40% of total corn requirement of Sri Lanka.

Total modern storage facilities of 75,000Mt.

Drying capacity in both processing plants 50 Tones per hour.

Wet Corn with 23% moisture can be reduced up to 12%.

Following Extension Services provided by us to the farmers to achieve the above targets were highly effective.

  • High Quality Seeds and Fertilizer
  • Technical Advice regarding corn cultivation
  • Coordinating credit facilities for farmers with Banks

KST Evergreen envisioned the initial concept of self-sufficiency of corn and guided the Government to take following bold steps.

  • Introducing a New Comprehensive Rural Credit (NCRC) scheme for corn
  • Imposing a 35% Cess Tax on imported corn
  • Low interest rate charged from corn collecting companies for stocked corn
  • Importation of corn processing equipment and machinery exempted from Taxes
  • Increased restrictions on corn importers such as approvals from Department of Agriculture

Thus, KST Evergreen was awarded the Best Corn Promoter by the National Livestock Ceremony in 2007.

Today, we are proud of our success that with much needed Governmental support Sri Lanka produces 90% of country’s corn requirement.

Also by saving the foreign exchange KST Evergreen is humbly proud that we uplifted the livelihood of Dry Zone Farmers.
